Anthrax Reveal New Guitarist: Jon Donais of Shadows Fall

Image

Last night, during a TeamRock Radio interview, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian made it public that the band’s new guitarist is Shadows Fall axman Jon Donais. Donais has been filling in with Anthrax since Rob Caggiano left the band in January to join Volbeat.

“Jon is a bro and he’s also a total fucking ripper,” Ian said during the interview, which you can hear below. “I’ve worked with him twice before on side projects and he tears it up. I’m excited to have him on my right burning up the stage with Anthrax. ’13s gonna be a good year.”

Donais said:

“I grew up on Anthrax, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of the Big Four, I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in.

“Then Scott called me and everything fell into place. Rob and I are using Skype to work on solos and other guitar parts, so he’s being great. I also have to give special thanks to my band — Brian, Matt, Jason and Ed — who have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do this.”

NEWSTED's 'Heavy Metal Music' Cracks U.S. Top 40

Image

“Heavy Metal Music”, the debut album from NEWSTED — the new band featuring former METALLICAVOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist Jason Newsted and STAIND guitarist Mike Mushok — sold nearly 8,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 40 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was made available on August 6 in North America via Chophouse Records/Collective Sounds and August 5 in Europe through Spinefarm RecordsJason told Billboard.com the 11-song album was very similar to the band’s debut EP, “Metal”, which opened with around 6,200 units to debut at No. 62. “The EP was always intended to be the primer, a sampler of what was to come on the LP,” he said. “It’s all metal all the time. It’s not all fast, but it is all heavy.”

Regarding how the material for NEWSTED‘s debut album came together, Jason told Loudwire: “It started out as my seeds for the first eleven songs that I made on my GarageBand thing. I wrote all the tracks — guitars, bass, drums, everything and gave them to Jessie [Farnsworth, guitar] and Jesus [Mendez Jr., drums] and had them go learn it, put their artistry on it and so it was collaborative in that way for the first batch. Like the four songs on the EP came from that initial eleven, so that’s how those songs went. Each day as we get deeper into the songs, the collaboration gets deeper as well. I have come a long way from my tunnel vision of ‘Only my ideas are good enough’ bullshit, and I’m a lot more open to everyone’s ideas and the artistry of each person to make it what it is. And three heads is better than one and that kind of thing. So it has become more collaborative as we go. I’ve written ten more since that time in October last year and a few of them have made their way onto this LP now. Once again, they were all my seeds, but now that we have Mike Mushok in the band and I give the music to all three of those guys, now I have three great artists bringing back their responses and their counterpoint playing to my ideas, so it’s becoming more and more collaborative every day and on this LP there will be shared writing credits on at least half of the songs with the writing credits now.”

TOM MORELLO Working On First Heavy Rock Album Since AUDIOSLAVE

Image

In a new interview with Bloody DisgustingRAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist Tom Morello revealed that he is working on a new heavy rock album, to be released sometime in 2014. The effort, which may not be issued under the NIGHTWATCHMAN banner (unlike Morello‘s previous solo releases), “will be the first time since RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE or AUDIOSLAVE that I’ve made a really big rock record,” Tom said. “It’s just time to rock and I’ve written a batch of songs with huge riffs and huge grooves. I’m working it out with my band now and we’re about five songs deep at this point, but we’re taking our time with it. It will definitely be a release-the-hounds effort.”

Morello‘s third folk-oriented album under the THE NIGHTWATCHMAN name, “World Wide Rebel Songs”, came out in 2011 via New West Records.

Tom recently joined the lineup of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND for a series of shows in Australia while veteran E STREET BAND member Steven Van Zandt was filming a new TV show.

TÝR release new single, “Mare Of My Night” on MetalInsider.net

Image

Valkyrja, the seventh full-length album from the Faroe Islands natives, TÝR, will be released on September 17th in North America, and September 13th/16th in Europe/UK. After having unveiled the opening track on the album, the band has launched the second track, “Mare of My Night,” on MetalInsider.net. Stream the song new HERE.

Vocalist/guitarist Heri Joenson comments: “Mare Of My Night was by far the most difficult song on the album to write, music wise. What I usually do is work on a basic idea, a melody with a chord progression. I make variations over the basic idea and then I pick out the best variations for the respective parts of the song, verse, chorus etc. For this one I had more variations than ever before and I made more versions of this song that I’ve ever done before, so it was very difficult to choose. I’m still not sure I made the best possible song, which is not a satisfying feeling at all. But there you have it.

As for the text, once I went to work on it, it was written in a day or two, in the evenings during studio time. I had the title and the story line long in advance. It’s based on the mare from folklore, the human-like creature that lies on top of you, riding you, causing bad dreams. As in nightmare, riding like a mare etc. Our anonymous viking, the protagonist of the story, finds in this song that his earthly woman has gone from being a goddess to being nightmare. It is also the most sexually explicit piece of lyric I have written so far.”

For ValkyrjaTýR collaborated with Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark. Along with Hansen, the band recruited acclaimed drummer George Kollias to act as studio drummer and Leaves’ Eyes vocalist Liv Kristine joined vocalist/guitarist Heri Joensen for a vocal duet on “The Lay of Our Love.”

The opening track to the album, “Blood of Heroes,” is streaming now at metalblade.com/tyr, whereValkyrja is also available for pre-order. Limited edition pre-order bundles are available that include TýRrune pendants, t-shirt, vinyl LP, and the CD.

About Valkyjra:
Valkyrja is a concept album with a story line based loosely around an anonymous Viking age warrior who leaves his woman and goes off to impress the Valkyrie on the battlefield so that she may bring him to Valhalla, or to Fólkvangr, the home of Freyja—the goddess associated with love, sexuality, beauty, fertility, gold, sorcery, war, and death. One can say the album is also indirectly about women and how they affect men and what men will do to impress and obtain women. Front man and founder Heri Joensen goes on to explain; “the woman that the warrior leaves may represent the earthly women. Freyja, The Lady Of The Slain, may represent the perfection of Women, and the Valkyrie is the link between the two, taking men from earthly to godly women.”

NIKKI SIXX Issues New SIXX: A.M. Album Update

Image

Rock band SIXX: A.M. — which consists of bassist Nikki Sixx, guitarist DJ Ashba and vocalist James Michael — is continuing work on material for its third album, tentatively due later this year.

In a new posting on his Facebook page, Sixx — who will embark on a twelve-show residency with MÖTLEY CRÜE at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas September 18 through October 6 — stated about the progress of the recording sessions for the new CD: “James has been with DJ in Vegas recording guitars on the new SIXX: A.M. album.We have a little ways to go to finish off the whole album, but were zeroing in on what the first single will be. It’s not gonna be easy.

“I am so proud of this album from the ground up. These songs are very unique. JamesDJ and myself feel we have topped ourselves, but in the end, [the fans] will be the ones who make that decision.

“We have agreed on the album title and the artwork direction. Photo sessions, videos, going over album cover concepts and mapping out release dates are all hovering above our heads now… The excitement is growing and things looks great for us to play live at some point.”

In a recent interview with LoudwireSixx stated about how the newSIXX: A.M. material is sounding: “This time we really want to fly on our own. We started out the songwriting process by having conversations about how far we can push ourselves musically … Our conversations were, ‘Let’s go as far to the left as we can, musically,’ and once we finish up a handful of songs that are pretty out there … I don’t even want to use any kind of references because it’ll throw people and they won’t really understand what I’m talking about. But we’re just taking a lot of chances musically and at this point nothing sounds at all like SIXX: A.M. that you would know, because we’re taking such huge leaps of faith that we’re going to land on our feet. But once we finish what we have now, we’re going to start backtracking into who we are as a band that we know at least. I think you’re going to end up with some songs on the album that are sort of surprising and bands that always did that for me were likeQUEEN. There would be songs on QUEEN‘s albums that would be like, ‘I can’t even believe that came out of a rock band,’ and that’s what we want to do. We want to take those leaps of faith and in the end, we are a rock band so we’ll go back to that at some point.”

SIXX: A.M., made a rare appearance — its first in four years — on April 11, 2012 at Revolver Golden Gods Awards at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

As each band member has been kept busy with their other careers — Sixxis also the bassist for MÖTLEY CRÜE and a syndicated radio host; Ashbais currently touring with GUNS N’ ROSESJames Michael is a famed rock producer who is currently working on new records for PAPA ROACH,HALESTORM and others — this marked the band’s first chance to perform in support of their current album, “This Is Gonna Hurt”, which supplied the #1 rock anthem “Lies Of The Beautiful People”.

“7”, the latest EP from SIXX: A.M., came out in December 2011 and sold around 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The effort contained acoustic versions of songs from the group’s first two albums — 2007’s “The Heroin Diaries” soundtrack and 2011’s “This Is Gonna Hurt”.

Released on May 3, 2011, SIXX: A.M.‘s sophomore album, “This Is Gonna Hurt” is a companion piece to Sixx‘s “This Is Gonna Hurt: Music, Photography And Life Through The Distorted Lens Of Nikki Sixx” book, a follow-up to his New York Times bestseller, “The Heroin Diaries”.
